Teaching 4,500 Engineering Students to Build Online Businesses Without Writing Code

Over 4,500 participants trained across 10+ colleges through hands-on workshops focused on visibility, user acquisition, and monetization.

While India’s engineering colleges continue to produce thousands of programmers each year, a young entrepreneur from Nashik has been addressing a gap few institutions have recognized. He has been teaching aspiring technologists how to build and monetize online businesses without writing a single line of code.

Dinesh Modi, founder of the Nashik-based digital marketing firm Innovations, has spent the past two years conducting intensive workshops across more than ten engineering and management institutions in western India. His program, “Weave Your Web,” has trained over 4,500 students and faculty members to create sustainable web-based ventures using accessible, non-technical tools.

“Everyone assumes you need to be a programmer to work in the technology space,” says Modi. “What we are proving is that creativity and business thinking can be just as powerful as code.”

Bridging the Education Gap

The initiative grew out of Dinesh Modi’s early experience building Innovations into a full-service digital marketing agency serving clients in seventeen countries. While working with young professionals and college graduates, he identified a consistent gap in technical education. Many students understood technology and business concepts but lacked a bridge between the two.

‘Weave Your Web’ was created to close that gap by introducing a practical framework for digital entrepreneurship. The sessions guide participants in establishing an online presence, creating digital content, attracting users through search visibility, and monetizing platforms through advertising, affiliate, and subscription models. The focus throughout remains on real-world execution rather than coding proficiency.

After a series of city and state-level workshops in 2012, where the format and curriculum gained rapid popularity among engineering students and faculty members alike, ‘Weave Your Web’ expanded to a national platform in February 2013. The program, hosted at N.D.M.V.P. College of Engineering in Nashik, attracted more than 1,400 registrations from institutions across India, with over 650 participants attending in person and others joining through a live webcast. The overwhelming response confirmed the growing demand for accessible digital entrepreneurship education and marked a major milestone in the program’s development.

Hands-On Results

What distinguishes ‘Weave Your Web’ from conventional training programs is its strong focus on application. Participants are not limited to theoretical instruction; they actively design, build, and publish live web projects during the sessions. Each workshop combines demonstrations, guided exercises, and individual project work, ensuring that every participant experiences the complete process of taking an idea from concept to online execution.

The program’s structure proved especially effective for students who found programming-intensive courses challenging. By removing technical barriers, it enabled a broader range of learners to explore digital creation and entrepreneurship with confidence. Faculty members at several institutions also participated in these sessions, further extending the program’s reach and influence within academic environments.

Curriculum Adoption and Reach

The consistent positive feedback from participants and faculty prompted multiple institutions to explore incorporating ‘Weave Your Web’ modules into their ongoing academic programs. The model’s project-based approach complemented existing engineering curricula by adding practical, market-oriented learning outcomes.

At several colleges, departments began evaluating how specific components such as digital presence building, search visibility, and online monetization could be integrated into entrepreneurship and IT electives. This growing academic interest demonstrated that ‘Weave Your Web’ had evolved beyond a short-term workshop and into a scalable educational framework adaptable across institutions.

Ahead of the Curve

The emergence of ‘Weave Your Web’ coincided with a period of rapid change in India’s startup ecosystem. As companies such as Flipkart and Snapdeal began drawing national attention and major funding, the need for entrepreneurial skill development within engineering education became increasingly evident.

Introduced at a time when few technical institutions offered structured programs on digital entrepreneurship, Weave Your Web’ filled that void by providing a practical, outcome-driven model. Its early success demonstrated that engineering colleges could play a central role in preparing students for the digital economy.

In recognition of his contribution to promoting entrepreneurship and innovation, Dinesh Modi was honored in 2013 by the NIMA IT Forum, in association with NASSCOM, as Nashik’s Youngest CEO for his regional impact in the IT sector.

Democratizing Digital Opportunity

Another defining aspect of ‘Weave Your Web’ was its reach beyond major cities. While Mumbai and Bangalore were already established hubs for technology and startups, the program focused on bringing digital business education to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across India that had limited exposure to the technology industry and startup culture.

This regional focus enabled students in smaller cities to access the same kind of practical learning typically available only in metropolitan institutions. The workshops, which ranged from sixteen to thirty-two hours over two to six days, combined demonstrations, guided exercises, and live project work. Each session was conducted personally by Dinesh Modi to ensure consistent quality and delivery across institutions.

Beyond Job Placement

At its core, ‘Weave Your Web’ represents a shift in how technical education defines success. Rather than focusing solely on campus placements, the program promotes self-driven career creation and independent digital entrepreneurship. It encourages participants to view technology not only as a skill but as a platform for creativity, innovation, and financial independence.

With more than 4,500 participants trained and several institutions integrating its modules into their coursework, ‘Weave Your Web’ has evolved into a quiet movement within India’s technical education system, one that places creativity, confidence, and opportunity on equal footing with code.

As of this writing, many former participants have begun building self-sustaining online ventures and digital products of their own. A number of them have gone on to establish small-scale digital marketing startups or freelance practices that continue to grow steadily. Their progress serves as tangible evidence of how accessible, practical education can translate into real economic empowerment.
