14 Classic Books You Need to Read Before They Hit the Big Screen in 2025

As the film industry continues to draw inspiration from literature 2025 is set to be an exciting year for fans of movie adaptations. We take a look at 14 of the most highly anticipated adaptations set to release next year:

Cold Storage, David Koepp

Details are scarce at the moment but director Jonny Campbell is set to stick closely to the plot of Koepp’s 2019 bestseller. The story see bioterror operative Roberto Diaz, played by Liam Neeson, inspect a suspected biochemical attack. As a highly mutative organism threatens to cause death and destruction Diaz and his team face a dramatic race against time. 

The Amateur, Robert Littell

Director James Hawes takes on the second adaptation of Littell’s 1981 thriller.  Rami Malek steps into the lead role, likely portraying Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer seeking revenge after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Malek is also the executive producer with the plot expected to stay true to the original story. Scheduled to hit the big screen in 2025,  the movie will explore themes of revenge and personal redemption, with dramatic action scenes expected. 

Mickey7, Edward Ashton

Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated follow-up from his Best Picture win for “Parasite” is an adaptation of  “Mickey 17.”, Edward Ashton’s 2022 science fiction novel. The movie stars Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and Naomi Ackie. The novel tells the story of a  disgruntled employee on a mission to colonize an ice world named Niflheim but each time an iteration of Mickey dies a new body is regenerated retaining many memories of the previous versions. This sounds like an interesting one indeed and we can’t wait for it to hit our screen next year.

The Twits, Roald Dahl

There have been many memorable adaptations of Roald Dahl’s works over the years, including “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” and “Matilda.” Now, Netflix is set to bring an animated version of “The Twits” to life, the first time this 1980 children’s novel will be adapted into a movie. “The Twits” tells the story of a mischievous couple who delight in playing a series of practical jokes on others for their own amusement. Phil Johnston (Ralph Breaks the Internet) produces the Jellyfish Pictures (The Boss Baby) animation so it looks set to be a hit for people of all ages.  

Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir

Andy Weir’s “Project Hail Mary,” is set to be adapted into a movie in 2025 after the success of his previous novel “The Martian,” which was turned into a blockbuster film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. “Project Hail Mary” follows the story of a school teacher turned astronaut who awakens from a coma in space. The film adaptation will feature Ryan Gosling as the lead, with Phil Lord and Chris Miller, known for the “Spider-Verse” movies, set to direct.

Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s iconic novel “Frankenstein” is set to receive a fresh adaptation in 2025 by “The Shape of Water” director Guillermo del Toro. While the full cast has yet to be announced, there are rumors of several high-profile actors in talks for key roles which makes the project even more exciting. Originally published in 1818, “Frankenstein” is one of the most enduring works of literature. It tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a scientist who creates a sentient being through unorthodox scientific experiments. 

Snow White

A live-action adaptation of the classic Disney film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” IS expected to hit theaters in 2025. The 1937 Disney animated film is beloved by many, so there’s a lot for “The Amazing Spiderman” director Marc Webb to live up to. Rachel Zegler plays the lead role with Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen. There’s been controversy surrounding key changes to the story changes, color-blind casting and the portrayal of the dwarf characters but Disney enthusiasts are excited nevertheless. 

I Know What You Did Last Summer, Lois Duncan

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson of “Do Revenge” fame takes on a refresh of Duncan’s slasher thriller. The book follows a group of teenagers who are involved in a hit-and-run accident and decide to keep it a secret. A year later, they begin receiving ominous messages from someone who knows what they did, leading to a suspenseful and terrifying unraveling of their lives. The story will be set in the present day, giving the classic tale a modern twist, and will star original cast member Jennifer Love Hewitt. 

Klara and the Sun, Kazuo Ishiguro

The highly acclaimed novel “Klara and the Sun” by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro is set to be adapted into a film scheduled for release in 2025. The novel is a thought-provoking exploration about artificial intelligence, love, and the essence of humanity. The story is told from the perspective of Klara, an Artificial Friend (AF) designed to provide companionship to children. Ex Machina’s Alex Garland directs the movie, tackling the complex questions about human emotions, relationships and what it means to truly be alive.

She Rides Shotgun, Jordan Harper

The highly anticipated film adaptation of Jordan Harper’s novel “She Rides Shotgun” is set to hit theaters in 2025. The project has already generated significant buzz, especially with the announcement that Taron Egerton will star in the lead role. The novel tells the harrowing story of an eleven-year-old girl named Polly McClusky and her ex-convict father, Nate. After Nate is released from prison, he discovers that both he and Polly are targets of a violent gang and has to fight for their survival.

The Electric State, Simon Stalenhag

Dystopian science fiction fans have something exciting to look forward to in 2025 as the film adaptation of  Stålenhag’s graphic novel hits the big screen. Set in an alternate version of 1997 America, the novel follows a teenage girl named Michelle and her robotic companion as they traverse a desolate landscape filled with abandoned drones and decaying technology.

One Hundred Years of Solitude, Gabriel García Márquez

Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece “100 Años de Soledad” is set to be adapted into a Netflix series, scheduled for release in 2025. This highly anticipated adaptation aims to bring the magical realism and rich narrative of Márquez’s novel to a global audience, offering a new way to experience the epic tale of the Buendía family. With the involvement of Márquez’s family, the series is expected to faithfully represent the novel’s themes, characters, and setting.

El Eternauta, Héctor Germán Oesterheld and  Francisco Solano López

The classic Argentine science fiction graphic novel is slated for a film adaptation set to release in 2025. The story follows Juan Salvo, who, along with his family and friends, must survive an alien invasion in Buenos Aires. Lucrecia Martel, known for her work on “La Ciénaga” and “Zama,” is set to direct the film with the cast yet to be officially announced.
